The limbic system is the basis of our emotions. It contains the thalamus(sensory switch board), hypothalamus, the amygdala(most associated with rage), and the hippocampus.
Most of the senses of our body head straight to thalamus so it can relay messages to the rest of the brain so it makes sense. However the sense of smell goes straight to the limbic system, linking smell to emotion.
