What is the brainstem?

The brainstem is the lower part of the brain which is connected to the spinal cord.

What does it do?

Any function required for a person to stay alive is controlled by the brainstem: breathing, circulating blood, processing food.

It controls your involuntary muscles, the muscles which you cannot control, such as the heart, lungs, or stomach. The part of the brain stem that controls the involuntary muscles is called the medulla.
